The Hudson River School was a mid-19th century American art movement embodied by a group of landscape painters whose aesthetic vision was influenced by romanticism. The paintings for which the movement is named depict the Hudson River Valley and the surrounding area, including the Catskill, Adirondack, and White Mountains; eventually works by the second generation of artists associated with the school expanded to include other locales in New England, the Maritimes, the American West, and South America.

In 1774 Gainsborough moved from Bath to London, and by 1777 he was well established, exhibiting portraits of members of the royal family at the Royal Academy. This full-length of the statuesque Mrs. Elliott—a Scottish lady of great beauty but easy virtue—was apparently commissioned by her lover, the first marquis of Cholmondeley, and was exhibited at the R.A. in 1778. Its elegance, delicate coloring, and fluid handling reflect the influence of Van Dyck.

Joan of Arc - Jules Bastien-Lepage (French, Damvillers 1848–1884 Paris)

Jules Bastien-Lepage
(French, Damvillers 1848–1884 Paris)

Joan of Arc, the medieval teenaged martyr from the province of Lorraine, gained new status as a patriotic symbol after France ceded the territory to Germany following the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71). Bastien-Lepage, a native of Lorraine, depicts the moment when Saints Michael, Margaret, and Catherine appear to Joan in her parents’ garden, rousing her to fight against the English invaders in the Hundred Years War. When the painting was exhibited in the Salon of 1880, critics praised the expressiveness of the principal figure, but found the saints’ presence at odds with Bastien-Lepage’s naturalistic style.

Portrait of Artist's Mother, October 1888, Norton Simon Museum of Art, Pasadena, California

Portrait of Artist's Mother, October 1888,
Norton Simon Museum of Art, Pasadena, California

Portrait of the Artist's Mother is a painting Vincent van Gogh made in 1888 of his mother, Anna Carbentus van Gogh from a black-and-white photograph. In September 1888 Van Gogh - answering to a letter of his sister Wil who had told him of a recent photograph of their mother - asked for a print. About a week later he received it, but - "troubled by the black" - sat down to paint a copy based on this likeness: Van Gogh's initial introduction to art was through his mother, an amateur artist. After years of strained relationship with family members, Van Gogh excitedly shared some of his works his mother would cherish most, those of flowers and natural settings. In this painting of his mother, Van Gogh captures her dignified, proud nature

Starry Night Over the Rhône (September 1888) is one of Vincent van Gogh's paintings of Arles at nighttime. It was painted at a spot on the bank of the Rhône River that was only a one or two-minute walk from the Yellow House on the Place Lamartine which Van Gogh was renting at the time. The night sky and the effects of light at night provided the subject for some of his more famous paintings, including Cafe Terrace at Night (painted earlier the same month)
and the later canvas from Saint-Rémy, The Starry Night.

Giovanni Battista Tiepolo - Allegory of the Planets and Continents

Giovanni Battista Tiepolo
Allegory of the Planets and Continents

Italian Rococo was mainly inspired by French Rococo, since France was
the founding nation of that particular style. The styles of the Italian Rococo were very similar
to those of France. The style in Italy was usually lighter and more feminine than
Italian Baroque art, and became the more popular art form of the settecento.
The leading artistic centers during the Rococo in Italy were Venice, Genoa and Rome, Most Italian Rococo artists came from Venice, such as Canaletto, Tiepolo, Guardi, Piazzetta, and Bellotto, but also from Rome, and Genoa, such as Piranesi, and Pannini. Artists such as Castiglione and Alessandro Magnasco brought the vogue of Rococo art to Genoa, and Neapolitan Rococo was mainly based on landscapes and naturalistic themes. Canaletto and Tiepolo were among the most prominent painters of the age, and they painted many frescos and cityscapes (particularly Canaletto).
